Internet Explorer Download

If you are at all worried about installation, you may find it useful to print out this page before you start.
Also, remember to read any directions provided by Microsoft.

Many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) provide a disk for the initial connection to the Internet. Sometimes it will be their logo which you click on for access. With others it may be a sort of user interface. If you experience difficulties after installing the latest version of IE, bypassing the ISP interface may be the answer.

The alternative, if you have a problem but want to continue to use your existing interface, will be to ask your ISP what to do. Some ISPs like their members to use a specific browser, either IE or Netscape, or it may even be their own. Each set-up is specific to that provider. However, it is normally up to you which browser you actually use. The ISPs just want to advertise.

There are various ways to set up a bypass but the easiest way is probably to:

  • Right click on the IE icon on your desktop. If the icon is not there you will find it in the directory into which the new version was placed - the default is C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Iexplore.exe).

  • Right click to select "Properties" and then "Connections" (see below).

  • Under "Dial-up settings" you should see your ISP listed. If not, you can either use the "Internet Connection Wizard" or click on "Add" (probably the simplest approach) and follow the instructions. You will need to know the telephone number used to gain access to the 'net, otherwise you will have to get this info from your ISP. To complete the process you will also need your user name and password.

  • Once set up, ensure that your new connection is the default - it will show "(Default)" after the name. If it doesn't, select it and click the "Set Default" button.

  • To get straight through to the Internet when you click on the IE icon, select the "Always dial my default connection" (as shown).

If this doesn't work, please feel free to e-mail me (assuming you still can) with as much detail as possible and your phone number and, if I'm around, I will do my best to help. However, I can't guarantee to get things working again, so please note that downloading is ultimately at your own risk! That said, if you have been around computers for a while, you shouldn't have too much to worry about.
